1. Asem-Asem Iga

This is a legendary thick soup that rich in flavor from ribs and a refreshingly sour taste. It is originally from Demak, but now spreading out to Central Java and East Java. The star is on the tender ribs and the broth which has a complex sweet, sour, and spicy that will tickle your palate. The various fresh-cut vegetables such as tomato, red chili, wuluh starfruit, and string beans make it a perfect combination. Enjoy this dish for your dinner and add a plate of rice to accompany your meal.

2. Garang Asem

Another sour dish which is also one of my favorites. Garang Asem maybe is not seen in many restaurants, but once you taste this delicious dish, you will crave more. This dish is famous firstly in Kudus, but now it spreads out to more cities in the northern part of Central Java, such as Semarang, Demak, Pati, and Pekalongan. The dish is wrapped and cooked in a banana leaf and served this way to keep it looks traditional. The dish is strong in sour, savory, and spicy flavor due to the wuluh starfruit, chicken broth, and chilis. The taste that will never fail you. Serve it with rice and it feels heavenly.

3. Gudeg

Last but not least, this food is quite well-known compared to the other two dishes. Most people maybe know that Gudeg is originally from Yogyakarta, but it is not completely correct. Different cities offer different serving styles, such as wet or dry, sweeter, or savorer. Nonetheless, the dish consists of typical ingredients like opor ayam (chicken in coconut milk), pindang egg (sweetened hard-boiled egg), tofu, sambal goreng krecek (crisp beef skins stew), and green or unripe jack fruit stew. A balanced combination of spices creates a fantastic flavor in the dish. For those who love savory chicken feet or pindang eggs, we also offer them in our menu list.

These are my best picks from Central Java. Which one is your favorite? Or, maybe you love more on our Three Best Food from Solo, check it out. You can see our full menu and try our other special dishes made for our beloved customers.
